Remember Smurfette? I sure do! I was a kid when the Smurfs became mini pop icons. We were all avid collectors of the tiny, blue and white figurines and their mushroom-shaped housing.
So when I recently came across The Smurfette Principle as it relates to the representation of women in areas such as business, I was intrigued.
What I discovered was a real wake-up call.
Think about it. How many smurfs were there? Papa Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Clumsy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Handy Smurf, Jokey Smurf.... the list goes on and on. Among all of the original Smurfs (a total of 100), however, there was only one female: Smurfette.
The Smurfette Principle, coined by Katha Pollitt of the New York Times, refers to the idea that in a group of people, one female character is included but is surrounded by many male characters, often leading to her being treated as the token female.
"Boys are the norm, girls the variation; boys are central, girls peripheral; boys are individuals, girls types," Pollitt writes. "Boys define the group, its story and its code of values. Girls exist only in relation to boys."
Overcoming The Smurfette Principle requires us as women to actively challenge the social norms that reinforce tokenism and gender imbalances.
Here are three ways women can take action to confront and dismantle this principle:
1. Amplify Other Women's Voices and Experiences
One way women can actively overcome The Smurfette Principle is by lifting up other women through mentorship, support and collaboration, especially in environments where women are unrepresented including business.

2. Challenge Gender Stereotypes and Reject the Status Quo
To avoid being pigeonholed into stereotypical roles or expectations (a common by-product of the Smurfette Principle), women can assert their autonomy by actively pursuing and taking on any role they like, even if that role is in a male-dominated field such as STEM, sports or the trades. We must also speak up against the bias we see. To remain silent is to reinforce the status quo.
3. Build and Strengthen Female Networks
Women can also overcome The Smurfette Principle by building strong, supportive networks with other women. These networks provide solidarity and a collective voice that challenges the assumption that a single woman can or should represent all women in a group.
When women come together in community, we can overcome stereotypes since collective strength amplifies the truth, challenges limiting norms, and creates spaces where diverse identities and contributions are valued equally.
Together, we can not only overcome The Smurfette Principle, but also help to reshape spaces where diversity and equality thrive, creating a more inclusive business ecosystem that works for all of us.
