3 Ways to Intentionally Leverage Your Business Network

A strong network is one of the most valuable assets you have, but it’s not enough to collect business cards or social media followers. To unlock the full potential of your connections, you need to be intentional about engaging with them.

Here are 3 ways to get started:

1. Awareness: Know Who’s in Your Network

Building a network is step one, but understanding who’s in it is step two.

It’s easy to collect followers and business cards, but how well do you know the people in your network? Awareness is about taking a deeper look at the individuals you’ve connected with and assessing how they align with your goals.

Start by asking yourself: Who are the potential collaborators, clients, mentors, or industry experts I've met lately?

You can use a simple spreadsheet to get organized. Identify areas where you might need more connections, or where there’s an opportunity to follow up with existing connections.

Once you have a clearer picture of your network, it’s time to nurture those relationships. Reach out regularly — even if it’s just a casual check-in. The more you know about who’s in your network, the better you can make use of it.

2. Affiliation: Leverage Common Interests

Affiliation is about aligning yourself with like-minded individuals and groups that can help elevate your business. It’s not just about who you know, but who you’re associated with.

Whether it’s professional associations, community groups, or industry events, affiliating yourself in a mindful way can create powerful opportunities for you and your business.

Start by identifying groups or organizations that resonate with your business values and goals. Attend in-person meetups or webinars, join LinkedIn groups, or become a member of professional organizations relevant to your industry.

These affiliations can open doors to collaboration, partnerships, and valuable insights from others who share your interests and challenges.

The key here is active participation. Don’t just attend events -- contribute! Your affiliations can become platforms for personal branding and networking, giving you access to resources and opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have.

3. Activation: Turn Connections into Action

Activation is where the magic happens. This is about transforming your relationships into tangible business opportunities.

But how do you activate a relationship? It starts by taking the initiative and offering something of value to your network, rather than waiting for something to come your way.

One simple way to activate your network is by creating opportunities for collaboration.

Reach out to your contacts and suggest joint ventures, partnerships, or even just brainstorming sessions. Offer to introduce people within your network to each other — playing the role of connector often results in good karma, and those introductions could lead to unexpected opportunities for you.

Another activation tactic is to ask for feedback or insights on your business. People in your network, especially those with relevant experience, often love to offer advice or suggestions. Their feedback can help you improve your products or services, making your business more competitive.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s a referral, advice on a tough decision, or financial support, sometimes the best way to activate your network is by directly engaging them in your business journey. Being transparent about your needs opens the door for others to lend a hand.

By using these three strategies — awareness, affiliation, and activation — you can leverage your network for greater success.

Networking is a two-way street, and it’s important to be intentional about how you engage with others. Don’t just build a network, build relationships that lead to growth, collaboration, and new opportunities.
